The Office Receptionist is the first contact for someone coming into or calling the Parish. The goal is to help those people find who they need to talk to or visit with. This volunteer answers the phone, takes & delivers messages; makes copies, plus various other tasks. This is on an as-needed basis, when the secretary must be away from the office or is ill. Time commitment is from 1 hour to 4.5 hours, depending on need. Call the office at 232-5900 for more information.
Mailings are not very frequent but occasionally we need help. This usually involves putting address labels on envelopes, folding letters & stuffing into envelopes, and sealing them. Care must be taken to match the name on the letter to the label on the envelope. We like to have a list of volunteers we can call when the need arises for envelope stuffing and mailing. Call the office at 232-5900 and ask to be put on the list.
Each year Holy Spirit hosts a Block Party on August 14, the Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for parishioners, their family, friends and our parish neighborhood neighbors to gather and enjoy a meal, music and fellowship.
Holy Spirit provides the meal, the Knights of Columbus #10982 do the grilling, the parishioners & friends who are here help with the clean-up, and we have volunteers help with the set-up of the tables in the Social Hall. The fun begins at 6:30pm, following the Holy Day Vigil Mass at 5:30pm. Call or email the office with questions or to volunteer with set-up or serving the meal.
The Holy Spirit Book Club meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, September through May, at 10:30am in the St. Therese Room. Contact the parish office if you are interested in joining!

The Library Volunteer helps make available reading materials that are helpful to the building up of the faith as well as providing books for children during Mass. The atmosphere the library creates helps create a space that advances the overall welcoming and hospitality our parish provides. Time Commitment is 5-20 minutes a week.
The Holy Spirit Pastoral Council is a great opportunity to assist the parish in carrying out her mission. The Council term is 3 years. Council members generally meet six times a year: the fourth Tuesday of the following months: January, March, May, August and the 3rd Tuesday of September, and November. The main role of the Pastoral Council is to advise the pastor on things that affect the pastoral life and mission of the parish. This is distinct from the Finance Council, which takes on the role of advising the pastor on financial, building and development matters. One event, a Friday Simple Supper, is coordinated by the Council. The council members are also encouraged/expected to volunteer at the Fall Festival and help with other events and happenings as deemed appropriate by the members and the pastor.
Hearts of Gold is a parish seniors’ program which meets the first Friday of each month following the 8:30am Mass in the Social Hall, October through April. New members are always welcome. Volunteers host by setting up and serving coffee and providing treats. Ideas about future speakers are welcome! Meetings start at 9am and last about 1 1/2 hours.
Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local charities, the opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless. Plus, the Knights of Columbus are the only organization in the world that offers a daily Mass for the repose of the souls of its deceased members and spouses. No where else in the world is this available. Please join us to hear about one of the most precious gifts of eternal life you can give your spouse. The KC’s meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Social Hall. All Catholic men 18 and over are eligible to join.
The parish likes to offer babysitting for various daytime and evening events. Older teens or adults may volunteer for this.
The Baptismal Garment is a simple white covering used at baptism to symbolize the purity of heart required to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. These symbolic white garments are made by several of our parishioners and are provided by the parish for the baptism. The work involves cutting, sewing and embroidering gowns of varying sizes to keep on hand in the Sacristy, especially when several baptisms are taking place in the same period. Baptism garments for adults are made to size based upon the submitted measurements of the width of one’s shoulders and from the base of the neck to middle of knee. If you are interested in helping with the Baptismal Garments please contact the church office for more information.
The Emergency Food Pantry provides food to the needy in our community on an emergency basis. Volunteers from Holy Spirit help on the 1st Thursday of each month, 1:00-4:00. Please contact Angie at the parish office for more information. Volunteers may assist with welcoming clients or answering phones, filling food baskets in the warehouse or doing various other jobs. We have something for everyone including those with physical limitations.
Volunteers are always needed to work at funerals as Luncheon Servers. Serving a funeral includes setting tables, serving the food and beverage, buffet style, and clean up after the gathering. Time commitment is anywhere from 2-4 hours. Call the office if you are interested in helping.
Volunteers represent Holy Spirit Church at St. Catherine’s North (Rosewood) and help bring residents to/from their rooms for 11am Mass on Thursday mornings. Volunteers would show up about ½ hour before Mass (10:30/10:40) to bring residents from their rooms to the chapel and bring them back to their rooms after Mass. Volunteers need to be vaccinated, but do not need to bring proof of vaccination.
The Prayer Chain is a group of people who pray for the needs of those who ask for prayer. Members of this group keep in contact with each other by telephone as needed. Holy Spirit has 2 coordinators that periodically send out a list of members and people who request prayers, about 2-3 times a year. The coordinators call chain members with new people requesting prayers in between mailings. Contact Patty Landman at 701-235-0185 or Mary Schmidt 701-540-7146 to become a chain member.
Each Friday of Lent, Holy Spirit hosts a Simple Supper following the Stations of the Cross. The Simple Suppers are prepared by various church groups such as: the Pastoral Council, SVdP, American Heritage Girls, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, and the Holy Spirit PTO. Each group is responsible for ordering the food, cooking, serving and cleaning up afterwards. Contact the office if you wish to help and are not a member of a church group.
The practical purpose of the Holy Spirit Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is to assist people within our parish boundaries who are in need of financial or material assistance to improve and/or stabilize their living situation. This is accomplished by providing a listening ear, monetary aid, prayer, referrals, and short-term emotional support and spiritual encouragement through a home visit and follow-up. The group also exists to build friendships and nurture spiritual growth among its members. Time commitment varies, but a minimum commitment would be to attend the monthly meetings (approximately 4 hours per month) and assist somewhat regularly on home visits and/or ancillary tasks (1-2 hours per month).
Holy Spirit has, as all other parish families do, members who are ill, elderly, or in some way disabled. Because of their situation, these people are either confined to their home, or are unable to make it to weekly Mass, or just have nobody that visits them and are lonely. We are always looking for people who enjoy visiting fellow parishioners and want to help lift their spirits by making a visit to a member of our homebound community. If you have time and would enjoy visiting your fellow homebound or elderly parishioners who may be lonely and enjoy a visit, or if you are homebound and would like to request a visit, please contact the office at 701-232-5900 and Deacon Paul Schneider can pair you up with someone. Deacon Paul coordinates the homebound visits.
Food & Fellowship occurs every Wednesday during the catechesis year (6-6:30 p.m) with the exception of nights where no class is scheduled or otherwise noted. This is a great opportunity to share a meal with others from the parish. We are in need of volunteers to cook and serve the meals, as well as volunteers for cleaning up. Contact Sarah, sarah@holyspiritfargo.com, if you would like to volunteer.
This role involves assisting in the decorating of the Church for the liturgical seasons. The environment plays an important role in helping us worship God and helping people feel at home and connected to Jesus. The given season/day assigned to you would involve both the set up and take down. The environment coordinator is in charge of the liturgical cage space, as well as finding families to do the setup/take down and helping them through the process. Works with parish business manager to ensure needed flowers, etc. are ordered. Other volunteers would operate under the environment coordinator.

Accompanying at Mass is a most important role within the Church as it aids in the lifting of our hearts and minds to worshiping God in the sacred liturgy. The main role of the accompanist is to provide support to musicians when singing. To do this, it is important to have keyboard musicians who are skilled at accompanying vocal groups and cantors, knowledge of the parts of the Mass, flexibility when songs are adjusted, ability to sight read and occasionally improvise, possess a certain amount of professionalism, and work effectively with the cantor, choirs, and priests. Accompanists are needed for Sunday liturgies and occasional funerals.

The main role of the cantor is to lead the congregation in singing. To do this, it is important to have a good singing voice, possess a certain amount of professionalism, as well as work effectively with the accompanist. Spirit Choir is directed by Mr. Ken Berntson. Members range in age from high school through adults. Rehearsals are every Wednesday evening from 6:30 - 8pm September through May in the school music room. The group leads music at the 9am Mass every Sunday, September through May.
Catechists are persons who teach the Catholic faith to others, either to a group or to an individual, generally in a classroom setting. One of the beautiful gifts of serving as a catechist is that you grow in your own knowledge and understanding of the faith as you pass it on to others. Catechists need to have a good understanding of the church’s teachings, have the ability to share their own living faith, and are willing to spend time with children, youth or other adults in a formal setting, to carry out the work of catechesis. Our 1st-5th Grade Catechesis program meets from 6:30-7:30pm on Wednesday evenings during the school year.
Assistants help with the students with activities, take attendance, help with classroom management, and overall help the catechist with whatever needs to be done. This is a great step if you are interested in someday becoming a catechist but would like more classroom experience first.
After catechists have gained experience through a year or more of teaching, they may serve as substitutes when regular teachers are absent. Serving as a substitute is a great option if you can’t commit to every Wednesday evening but have an interest in passing on the faith to children. If in the event that Holy Spirit Parish decides to facilitate our own vacation Bible school we will need a variety of volunteers to help make it possible. We would need people willing to lead small groups, games, music, and crafts, as well as roles such as preparing snacks, cleaning up, registration, and possibly childcare for younger children of volunteers who are leading sessions. Contact the parish office if you are interested in helping.
A Youth Discipleship mentor is someone who takes on the role to teach the Catholic faith to high schoolers or middle schoolers in a small group setting, usually on Wednesday evenings. Mentors model how to live as a Christian and teach their small group about living a life of faith, as well as participating in volunteer activities or other outings. Co-Mentors work with another adult in leading one group and have each other to help in leading the group. If you are interested contact Rachel, rachel@holyspiritfargo.com.
